#48 - Glass Ceiling
You would think, after centuries of experience, that educators would know exactly what works and precisely what would be taught when and in what order. Yet, teachers and schools scramble to every year to prepare and put together new materials and new curricula for the next year.
But, what’s wrong with the old stuff? Granted, there is constant progress in teaching methods and, for some subjects, there is always new or refined knowledge that has to incorporated into the body of what is known about that subject. Some subjects are addressed to a new technology or some new frontier that would cover a new area. But, the old stuff was fine, wasn’t it?
Looking back, it seems that we throw out what works, say it doesn’t work when it does or replace what works with something that is just made up based on fantasy science, giving it a really good sounding, sophisticated name and justifying it by some made-up or unproven principle.
This mechanism works on a general basis as well as a specific level. On a general level, the press is supposed to collect data and report it to us because we don’t have the resources or the time to do it ourselves. In this way, the press is a kind of public service. However, when the press distorts the truth or slants it in some way, we immediately become slaves or zombies rather than an informed electorate.
Same thing in education. When educators hide or distort the facts or promote entirely untruthful data, we become the effect which makes us salves and zombies.
As was mentioned before, the knowledge about what works is probably already in existence. It is really wide and enormously vast, but so are a lot of things. If we can keep track of the stock market every second or operate blockchains for cryptocurrency, we can certainly keep tract of curricula, lesson plans and materials while rejecting false “discoveries” and people who come up with new stuff just to scoop up some gain for themselves.
So, no matter what we’re talking about, withholding information is like a creating a glass ceiling. Don’t let them suppress you. Demand unbiased and straightforward reporting from your press and your educators.
