Unfortunately, you are only known by the assumed size of your group. In most circumstances, as one individual, you can’t approach a school board or legislative body and get anything done. You have to appear or actually have a large group.

But that’s not impossible to do. Yes it takes some work and persistence, but it can be done.

One step - not necessarily the first - is just to get people to attend school board meetings or legislative events. You will probably have to keep a calendar, a contact list and have your talking points down so you can come off as knowledgeable and persuade people to participate.

Another step might be to organize write-in or phone-in campaigns. It can be phone-in or contact via e-mail, text or letter. Same mechanics - good contact lists and well written talking points.

Another effective method is through petitions with an abundance of signatures.

Don’t overlook infiltrating, befriending somebody influential or just plain lobbying people. You might find somebody sympathetic to your cause right off the bat.

While there seems to be instantaneous “anti-school” in the air lately, the methods here will probably not happen overnight. It’ll take some thought, time and effort. But it’s worthwhile. Let your school board and legislators know you are watching and are powerful enough to get them to listen to your concerns and act in your behalf.
